Pericles American Business & Legal Education Project, www.pericles.ru/able is the leading provider of international continuing legal education courses in Russia.  Courses are taught entirely in English by experienced, native-speaking professors.

From now until the seats fill up, we are offering a 2 for 1 deal for qualified students from top international law firms and companies that are members of AEB or AmCham.  Your firm can send two of you to the same course, or if your firm isn’t sponsoring training this semester you can join with a colleague or friend,  and the two students in the same course study for the price of one.   You save yourself or your HR department money and stress. 

Also, GMAT & GRE Prep Course starts January 23, for six weeks, meeting January 23 from 19:00-22:00, January 24 from 10:00-13:00, and then every Saturday from 10:00-17:00.

Courses available for this offer are the following:

  • When Deals Go Bad (a special Master Class on Debtor/Creditor & Secured Transactions Law)

This special course addresses the needs of transactional lawyers during today's financial upheaval.  Professor Robert Teets leads a team of visiting experts in an exploration of various aspects of dealing with defaulting businesses and business partners in this integrated global economy.  The course will discuss, among other things, the doctrine of contract law and strategies for securing the client in the contract, secured transactions and the rights of creditors under UCC article 9 and in other jurisdictions, bankruptcy, reorganizations and the rights of creditors in the bankruptcy process.  The course will also be examining the financial crisis, hearing from experts on what went wrong and what is the outlook for the future.  Professor Teets may be bringing in guest speakers, including economists and investment professionals, to talk about their practical experiences in a "Master Class" format. Wednesday Nights, 19:00-22:00, for 12 weeks.  Starting January 21.  Enrollment closes January 27.

  • Intellectual Property Law

This course is designed to give the student or practicing lawyer a basic understanding of Intellectual Property law and how it can apply in daily practice.  The course surveys the various areas of intellectual property law, including patent, copyright, trademark, trade dress, trade secret, and unfair competition.  While the focus of the class will be primarily on US Intellectual Property law, it will also explore international treaties and agreements, including the Berne & Paris Conventions, PCT, WIPO and the GATT/TRIPS Agreement, along with other international aspects.  The Professor is Patrick Thornton, an expert in Intellectual Property law from Houston Baptist University in Texas.  Monday nights, 19:00-22:00 for 12 weeks.  The course started January 19 but the first session can be made up and the enrollment will close on January 26.

Law of International Business Transactions

The course will cover international sales transactions as well as more complicated aspects of international transactions, such as technology transfer, foreign agent issues, political and legal risks of foreign direct investment, and resolution of disputes.  While the course will focus on private aspects of transactions (contracting and payment type issues) it will also examine the public aspects--trading systems and laws that govern the trade and business relationships between different nations and their companies.  The Professor is Chris Moore, who has practiced law with major international law firms in the US, Russia and Hong Kong.   Tuesday and Thursday nights, 20:45-22:15.  This course starts January 20, and enrollment will close on January 27.

  • Legal English

This extremely popular copyrighted legal English course is designed to enhance professionals' English speaking and writing capacities, with a specific focus on Anglo-Saxon legal terminology and principles. Concentrating on business law terminology, this course will assist practicing lawyers, advanced law students, legal translators and paralegals to become comfortable in working with English "legalese."  There are three groups available with varying levels of English:  Tues/Thurs 19:00-21:00 with Professor Thornton. Monday/Wednesday 20:00-22:00 with Professor Bochnev.  Saturday 11:00-13:00 and 14:00-16:00 with Professors Beale & Muchnik.  All classes are 12 weeks long.  Students may choose between groups to the extent that their English levels are appropriate to the groups chosen.

  • Introduction to American Law

This course is designed to overview the American legal system for interested foreign attorneys and to provide a foundation for LL.M. students who will later be studying more in-depth courses in American law in Moscow. Students will start by examining the American court system and the constitutional environment, particularly the constitutional environment for business and the rights of individuals in the United States. The class will look at the court system, constitutional law and individual rights, civil procedure, evidence, criminal procedural protections in the constitution, torts, contracts, property and business law. A major objective of the course is to learn to read and analyze cases in preparation for more advanced common law study. Thus heavy emphasis will be placed on case reading and discussion. Wednesday nights, 19:00-22:00, for 12 weeks. Starting January 21. Enrollment closes January 27.
