Chadbourne"s litigation department has earned a national reputation for excellence in complex high-stakes, high-profile business disputes. Our attorneys have extensive experience in a broad range of disciplines including products liability, commercial litigation, accountants" liability, securities litigation and regulatory enforcement, corporate governance, special investigations, environmental litigation, trusts and estates, insurance and reinsurance, and intellectual property.
Our practice comprises skilled trial lawyers who regularly try and win cases in state and federal courts throughout the United States and abroad. We also understand that disputes are often best resolved outside the courtroom, and we provide advice and devise action plans and policies that help clients avoid enmeshment in costly litigation in the first place. Thus, we make use of tools such as arbitration, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
Complex litigation problems today sometimes take the form of not just a single proceeding, but numerous related cases going forward simultaneously, and our litigators are skilled in managing complex, multi-jurisdictional litigation around the globe. We have the resources and knowledge to handle major litigation of large dimensions on a long-term basis; yet we also have the flexibility to handle smaller cases in a cost-effective manner.

Chadbourne has a long history of working for the energy sector and is a recognized name in the business. Over 100 Chadbourne attorneys work on energy related matters, 60 of them exclusively. Through our 12 worldwide offices, we are well positioned to meet clients’ needs wherever they operate; indeed, the firm has represented clients in energy transactions in more than 80 countries on six continents.
Chadbourne was integrally involved in the creation of the independent power industry in the United States in the late 1970"s and early 1980"s. It was instrumental in opening doors for independent generators in more than 20 U.S. states and acted as counsel in a seminal case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Since then, it has worked on many cutting-edge transactions. The firm has also played a pioneering role in privatizations of the electricity industry and privately financed infrastructure projects throughout Latin America, Russia and the former Soviet bloc countries, central Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
The firm"s international energy practice has a major presence in renewable areas such as wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and biofuels, with substantial experience in traditional oil and gas industries, electric and gas utilities, natural gas pipelines and LNG. Our energy clients include independent power producers, utilities, financial institutions and energy consumers. We can advise clients on every aspect of an energy project, such as regulation, financing, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, workouts and revenue securitizations.
Moreover, we have experience with emerging energy technologies. Our experience with clients in solar, wind, ethanol, biodiesel, ocean energy, fuel cells and other technologies gives us the understanding needed to meet the needs of nascent energy providers. This broad knowledge of our energy lawyers is a key part of Chadbourne’s new climate change practice, which will help clients address the business and legal aspects of global warming.
Our attorneys frequently speak at industry conferences, providing our perspective on energy issues. We also publish the highly regarded Project Finance NewsWire and host a conference, now in its 19th year, by invitation only, for leaders in the independent power industry.
